Back to the Shack

Mood/Music Monday

Fellow Weezer fans probably also purchased their new album, Everything Will Be Alright In the End, when it was released this past Tuesday. Fellow Weezer fans are probably also comparing it to (what I consider to be) their pinnacle album, Pinkerton, which was released in 1996. Pinkerton is not only my favorite Weezer album, it's among my top all-time favorite albums, up there with such contenders as Bright Eyes' Lifted and Radiohead's Hail to the Thief.

Pinkerton tends to be revered by Weezer fans, but what makes it so good? Why are people so drawn to that particular album?

I think part of it's honesty. Not just honest in the way that the Blue album is phenomenal, but honest in a way that exceeds all concern for the listener. You don't write a song like "Across the Sea" to impress people. It's that kind of openness, that ability as an artist to slice your heart in half and hand it to whoever's willing to listen, that makes art great. That's the kind of honesty that speaks to people.

Does that mean I've been whining for more than a decade, wishing they'd attempt to recreate what I consider a masterpiece? Hell no. I'd get bored writing the same book over and over again. How can I grow as an artist if I don't try different things? People always ask if I write anything aside from young adult supernatural novels. The answer is most definitely yes. I don't want to be the same writer book after book, just like I'm sure Weezer doesn't want to be the same band album after album. Let them do their thing, and learn to enjoy it for what it is—absolutely great rock music.

And I can see him tonight?

Your secret life of indiscreet discretions
I'd turn the screw and leave the screen

In dummy glasses and a cardigan
Oh, come on

With his feet inside your shoes?
Looking down every few steps
To pretend he walks with you

Even if it means I fail
'Cause this is what I was meant to do and
You can't put that on sale
